Read our Summer tips for adding a splash of colour to spruce up neutral toned rooms in your house.
An all white scheme in a home can offer a classic and sophisticated look, providing a neutral backdrop to other features within the room. It can however end up looking a bit sparse and boring if you don’t contrast it with some colour and pattern elsewhere in the room.
Here are a few ideas of how to add a splash of colour to a room without going overboard:
White is the perfect background to display your artwork. If you are feeling brave though you could paint one wall in a darker feature colour, you’ll be amazed at how the artwork will ‘pop’ out just as well if not better. A piece of bold artwork is an easy way to introduce a bit of pattern and colour to a neutral scheme, make sure it has a lot of colour to contrast with a plain wall and a big ‘statement’ piece always looks best.
2. Plants & Flowers
Bringing the outdoors in with some plants and flowers is a great way of adding a flourish of natural colour to contrast with a white scheme. ‘Botanicals’ are a huge trend at the moment so go for something big and bold like a cheese plant for a real wow factor.
3. Statement Furniture
Against your neutral walls, your choice of furniture will be the most prominent feature to draw the eye and is a great opportunity for some expression through colour. For example a prime candidate for a Living Room would be an eye catching sofa or a statement armchair or Footstool. At Eyecandy Interior Design we have a lot of bespoke furniture made for our clients. We have a huge library of fabulous fabrics to choose from and the beauty of having something made bespoke is that you can have it made to any shape or size you want and it will be unique to you.
4. Colourful Rugs, Cushions & Throws
If you are a little nervous of introducing colour into your room, then a great way to add little ‘pops’ of accent colour is with some cushions and throws. They can be easily changed and updated to suit the seasons for a fresh new look. A bright rug can also make a statement in any room. You could go for an intricate shape or maybe a stylish geometric pattern. Always keep in mind how much floor space you have to play with though so you don’t end up with a rug that is too big for your room!
Colour doesn’t have to be matt, introduce some polished Copper or Brass accents with furniture, lighting, tiles or even taps! A splashback in a Kitchen is a perfect place to experiment or add Brass panels to the side of an Island for real impact.
Enjoy playing with colour in your all white room, and don’t worry if you think something is too bold or too bright for a first attempt, you can simply tone it down by a quick re-paint or re-cover. Just think of it as art, and you’ll soon be enjoying the experience of adding colour.
